HSD17B14
hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 14
Pathway candidate — not linked to PFS or PSSD by any record here
Gene summary
A protein-coding gene on chromosome 19 (steroid hormone synthesis). 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, such as HSD17B14, are primarily involved in metabolism of steroids at the C17 position and also of other substrates, such as fatty acids, prostaglandins, and xenobiotics (Lukacik et al., 2007 ).

Protein reference (UniProt)
- Protein
L-fucose dehydrogenase
- Function
Catalyzes the NAD(+)-dependent oxidation of L-fucose, yielding L-fucono-1,5-lactone, which rapidly converts spontaneously to L-fucone-1,4-lactone. Can also act on D-arabinose and L-galactose, with lower catalytic efficiency. Does not use NADPH. May be the initial enzyme of the L-fucose degradation pathway in mammals.
- Pathway
Carbohydrate degradation; L-fucose degradation.
- Subcellular location
Cytoplasm.
- Tissue specificity
Highly expressed in brain, placenta, liver and kidney.

Why its pathway is in the library
Steroid-synthesis enzymes sit directly on the pathways perturbed by 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and SSRIs; inherited variation here is a candidate susceptibility factor for persistent post-drug phenotypes.
Written for the whole steroid synthesis family, not for HSD17B14 specifically.
Mentioned in 0 corpus records
No corpus record names HSD17B14 directly yet. It is in the library because it sits in a pathway the corpus tracks (Steroid synthesis).
