BHMT
betaine--homocysteine S-methyltransferase
Pathway candidate — not linked to PFS or PSSD by any record here
Gene summary
A protein-coding gene on chromosome 5 (methylation and one-carbon metabolism). Encodes a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of betaine and homocysteine to dimethylglycine and methionine, respectively. Defects in this gene could lead to hyperhomocyst(e)inemia, but such a defect has not yet been observed.

Protein reference (UniProt)
- Protein
Betaine--homocysteine S-methyltransferase 1
- Function
Involved in the regulation of homocysteine metabolism. Converts betaine and homocysteine to dimethylglycine and methionine, respectively. This reaction is also required for the irreversible oxidation of choline.
- Pathway
Amine and polyamine degradation; betaine degradation; sarcosine from betaine: step 1/2. Amino-acid biosynthesis; L-methionine biosynthesis via de novo pathway; L-methionine from L-homocysteine (BhmT route): step 1/1.
- Subcellular location
Cytoplasm, cytosol; Nucleus.
- Tissue specificity
Found exclusively in liver and kidney.

Why its pathway is in the library
One-carbon metabolism supplies methyl groups for DNA/histone methylation — the epigenetic layer implicated in persistent post-drug changes.
Written for the whole methylation / one-carbon family, not for BHMT specifically.
Mentioned in 0 corpus records
No corpus record names BHMT directly yet. It is in the library because it sits in a pathway the corpus tracks (Methylation / one-carbon).
