RDH16
retinol dehydrogenase 16
Pathway candidate — not linked to PFS or PSSD by any record here
Gene summary
A protein-coding gene on chromosome 12 (steroid hormone synthesis). Enables all-trans-retinol dehydrogenase (NAD+) activity; androstan-3-alpha,17-beta-diol dehydrogenase (NAD+) activity; and androsterone dehydrogenase activity. Involved in steroid metabolic process.

Protein reference (UniProt)
- Protein
Retinol dehydrogenase 16
- Function
Oxidoreductase with a preference for NAD. Oxidizes all-trans-retinol, 9-cis-retinol, 11-cis-retinol and 13-cis-retinol to the corresponding aldehydes. Has higher activity towards CRBP-bound retinol than with free retinol. Also oxidizes 3-alpha-hydroxysteroids. Oxidizes androstanediol and androsterone to dihydrotestosterone and androstanedione. Can also catalyze the reverse reaction.
- Pathway
Cofactor metabolism; retinol metabolism.
- Subcellular location
Microsome membrane; Endoplasmic reticulum membrane.
- Tissue specificity
Highly expressed in adult liver (at protein level). Detected in endometrium, liver and foreskin. Detected in the spineous layers of adult skin, and at lower levels in basal and granular skin layers. Detected in fetal liver and lung.

Why its pathway is in the library
Steroid-synthesis enzymes sit directly on the pathways perturbed by 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and SSRIs; inherited variation here is a candidate susceptibility factor for persistent post-drug phenotypes.
Written for the whole steroid synthesis / retinoid signaling family, not for RDH16 specifically.
Mentioned in 0 corpus records
No corpus record names RDH16 directly yet. It is in the library because it sits in a pathway the corpus tracks (Steroid synthesis, retinoid signaling).
