Gene summary
A protein-coding gene on chromosome 15 (drug and xenobiotic transporters). Predicted to enable bile acid transmembrane transporter activity and protein heterodimerization activity. Involved in bile acid secretion.

Protein reference (UniProt)
- Protein
Organic solute transporter subunit beta
- Function
Essential component of the OST-alpha/OST-beta complex, a heterotetramer that acts as the intestinal basolateral transporter responsible for bile acid export from enterocytes into portal blood. The OST-alpha/OST-beta complex efficiently transports the major species of bile acids (taurocholate). Taurine conjugates are transported more efficiently across the basolateral membrane than glycine-conjugated bile acids (By similarity). In the complex, SLC51B/OST-beta promotes the transmembrane translocation of bile acids. Can also transport steroids such as estrone 3-sulfate and dehydroepiandrosterone 3-sulfate, therefore playing a role in the enterohepatic circulation of sterols. Able to transport eicosanoids such as prostaglandin E2 (By similarity).
- Subcellular location
Basolateral cell membrane.
- Tissue specificity
Widely expressed with a high expression in ileum. Expressed in testis, colon, liver, small intestine, kidney, ovary and adrenal gland; and at low levels in heart, lung, brain, pituitary, thyroid gland, uterus, prostate, mammary gland and fat.
- Associated conditions
Bile acid malabsorption, primary, 2 (PBAM2).

Why its pathway is in the library
Transporters set systemic exposure to finasteride/SSRIs and clear conjugated steroid metabolites — directly relevant to both drug pharmacokinetics and Powers' clearance-centered PFS mechanism.
Written for the whole drug transporters family, not for SLC51B specifically.
Mentioned in 0 corpus records
No corpus record names SLC51B directly yet. It is in the library because it sits in a pathway the corpus tracks (Drug transporters).
