PPARG
peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma
Pathway candidate — not linked to PFS or PSSD by any record here
Gene summary
A protein-coding gene on chromosome 3 (steroid and nuclear hormone receptors). Encodes a member of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) subfamily of nuclear receptors. PPARs form heterodimers with retinoid X receptors (RXRs) and these heterodimers regulate transcription of various genes.

- Function (excerpt)
Ligand-activated transcription factor that forms obligate heterodimers with the retinoic acid receptor and acts as a key regulator of biological processes, such as adipocyte differentiation, lipid metabolism, glucose homeostasis and beta-oxidation of fatty acids. Activated by lipid ligands: binds peroxisome proliferators, such as hypolipidemic drugs, and fatty acids, such as prostaglandin J2 metabolites. Ligand-binding results in a conformational change in the receptor, promoting dissociation of repressors and recruitment of coactivators, and subsequent activation of target gene expression. Specifically binds to DNA specific PPAR response elements (PPRE) and modulates the transcription of its target genes, such as acyl-CoA oxidase (By similarity). Acts as a critical regulator of gut homeostasis by suppressing NF-kappa-B-mediated pro-inflammatory responses.
- Subcellular location
Nucleus; Cytoplasm.
- Tissue specificity
Highest expression in adipose tissue. Lower in skeletal muscle, spleen, heart and liver. Also detectable in placenta, lung and ovary.
- Associated conditions
Obesity (OBESITY); Lipodystrophy, familial partial, 3 (FPLD3); Glioma 1 (GLM1).

Why its pathway is in the library
Nuclear receptors transduce steroid signals into lasting gene-expression programs; persistent receptor-level remodeling (or silencing) is a leading hypothesis for symptoms that outlast drug exposure.
Written for the whole nuclear receptors family, not for PPARG specifically.
Mentioned in 0 corpus records
No corpus record names PPARG directly yet. It is in the library because it sits in a pathway the corpus tracks (Nuclear receptors).
