HTR1A
5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A
Gene summary
A protein-coding gene on chromosome 5 (neurotransmission). Encodes a G protein-coupled receptor for 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin), and belongs to the 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor subfamily. Serotonin has been implicated in a number of physiologic processes and pathologic conditions.

- Function (excerpt)
G protein-coupled receptor for 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin). Also functions as a receptor for various drugs and psychoactive substances. Ligand binding causes a conformation change that triggers signaling via guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) and modulates the activity of downstream effectors, such as adenylate cyclase. HTR1A is coupled to G(i)/G(o) G alpha proteins and mediates inhibitory neurotransmission: signaling inhibits adenylate cyclase activity and activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system that regulates the release of Ca(2+) ions from intracellular stores. Beta-arrestin family members regulate signaling by mediating both receptor desensitization and resensitization processes. Plays a role in the regulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine release and in the regulation of dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine metabolism.
- Subcellular location
Cell membrane; Cell projection, dendrite.
- Tissue specificity
Detected in lymph nodes, thymus and spleen. Detected in activated T-cells, but not in resting T-cells.
- Associated conditions
Periodic fever, menstrual cycle-dependent (PFMC).

Why its pathway is in the library
Monoamine, GABA, glutamate, and cholinergic systems are the direct pharmacologic targets of SSRIs/SNRIs (PSSD) and the downstream effectors of neurosteroid signaling (PFS).
Written for the whole neurotransmission family, not for HTR1A specifically.
