Gene summary
A protein-coding gene on chromosome 7 (neuroendocrine and peptide signaling). Encodes a neuropeptide that is widely expressed in the central nervous system and influences many physiological processes, including cortical excitability, stress response, food intake, circadian rhythms, and cardiovascular function. The neuropeptide functions through G protein-coupled receptors to inhibit adenylyl cyclase, activate mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), regulate intracellular calcium levels, and activate potassium channels.

- Protein
Pro-neuropeptide Y
- Function
Neuropeptide Y: Ligand for neuropeptide Y receptor type 1 (NPY1R) and neuropeptide Y receptor type 2 (NPY2R). Receptor binding induces adenylate cyclase-inhibiting G protein-coupled receptor signaling, resulting in inhibition of cAMP production. Receptor activation by NPY also leads to an increase of intracellular Ca(2+) levels. Is involved in the regulation of eating behavior, acting as a stimulator of food intake (By similarity). Involved in the regulation of colonic antisecretory tone, and colonic contractility (By similarity).
- Subcellular location
Secreted; Cytoplasmic vesicle, secretory vesicle, neuronal dense core vesicle.
- Tissue specificity
One of the most abundant peptides in the nervous system. Also found in some chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla.

Why its pathway is in the library
Peptide-hormone and related signaling modulates sexual function, stress, and behavior — symptom domains prominent in PSSD/PFS.
Written for the whole neuroendocrine signaling family, not for NPY specifically.
Mentioned in 0 corpus records
No corpus record names NPY directly yet. It is in the library because it sits in a pathway the corpus tracks (Neuroendocrine signaling).
